Jesus, our Solid Rock!

reetings brothers and sisters… Pastor Rob here

It seems that the world has gone completely insane! I mean, drag queen shows at elementary schools?…. What in the world is being taught to our children? Everything is being turned upside down. There is nothing sacred anymore. The sanctity of life in the womb has been abandoned. The sanctity of marriage between a man and woman has been rejected. Even the basic difference between men and women has been thrown away. Those moral values that were taken for granted a generation ago have been swept aside. Those things that are foundational to our society are crumbling, and as a result, our society is crumbling.

As a believer in Jesus Christ, I confess that I feel helpless to stem the tide of ungodliness that is engulfing our world. What can a Christian do in the midst of a godless world? Many years ago, David asked a similar question. He cried out, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3) That’s a great question. If those things that are foundational to our lives crumble, what can we do?

David answers his own question in the next verse. He reminds us of something even more foundational…”The LORD is in His holy temple, the LORD’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.” Yes! There is one foundation that is absolutely unshakable; God Himself! He rules and reigns from His throne in heaven. He is not unaware of what the sons of men are doing on earth. He not only sees these things, but He is testing the sons of men; in other words, He is examining the attitudes, words and deeds of all mankind and ultimately, He will judge each and every person on earth.

This should be a great comfort to those of us who know Jesus. The apostle Paul declares that Jesus Christ is our firm foundation (1 Corinthians 3:11) If we have built our life on that foundation, then we will stand secure even if the world around us is falling apart. The world is a dark place for sure, but Jesus Christ is the light of the world! And truly, there is something we believers can do during our pilgrimage through this dark world. We can be reflectors of Christ’s light: “Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” (Philippians 2:14-15) As the world grows darker, the light of Jesus Christ in His people should burn brighter! We who have the hope of everlasting life have every reason to be optimistic about the future, because we know Who holds the future! And our hope can be a beacon to guide our loved ones to the Lord Jesus Christ.

For reasons known only to Him, our Sovereign Lord is allowing the sin of man to run its course. Perhaps the vileness of sin will drive people to the Savior. Perhaps in the midst of terrible sin, God will send revival. Again, only God knows what the future holds. But we do know that he is not wringing his hands in despair, as if the world is beyond His control. In spite of the madness of the world, the Lord is bringing history to its intended conclusion. And we may be the generation that sees the culmination of all things! Amen! Even so, come Lord Jesus!
