How much is God worth? That seems like a crazy question doesn’t it? How can you possibly figure the value of Almighty God? All the wealth of all creation belongs to Him, but He Himself is infinitely more valuable than creation. His worth is beyond our comprehension! Who can possibly speak of His glorious merit? And yet, that is what we as believers are called to do, for that is the meaning of “worship”: “To ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name.”
When we speak of ascribing worth to God, we’re not talking about financial value! We are speaking of the worthiness of His majestic, holy nature…the value of who He is! The Book of Ephesians speaks of, “the riches of His grace;” “the unsearchable riches of Christ;” “the riches of His glory.” And in Colossians we read that in Christ, “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Again in Ephesians, we are told that He is “rich in mercy!”
And I think we can safely say that God is truly rich in all of His glorious attributes: He is rich in His love; He is rich in His faithfulness, His justice and His goodness.
So, when we worship the Lord, we are celebrating the reality of all of His riches! Jesus told the woman at the well, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24) Each of his rich attributes is a truth about Him that we can adore as we live in the Spirit. Through song, prayer, praise, thought, word and meditation, we can celebrate the unsearchable riches of Christ.
Our Lord created us and redeemed us to be instruments of worship! Let us respond to the call to worship that we hear every Christmas: “O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!” Every hour of every day is an opportunity to celebrate the eternal riches of the King of Kings!
